NSR - Canadian Pride in our fallen Heros

I know I shouldn't post non stamping related items on here as most come for the rubber..but I had to share this with you. It makes me very proud.

When one of our troops falls in war they are brought back to Trenton AFB in Ontario. They all travel the same route and along the highway there are many overpasses. A small phenomenon has flourished into something amazing. The over passes are full of everyday people who come out to pay tribute to these fallen heros as they make their final journey home. Then local fire departments, emergency services etc started to come out also...the highway became known as "The Highway of Heros" and now has been Officially named The Highway of Heros. Here is one of the videos showing a little bit of what happens for EVERY soldier that comes home to rest. There are now moves in other countries to follow this, if you read the comments..the British are now trying to create something similar.

Proud of our troops and proud aunt of a brand new recruit. Hopefully Afghanistan will be settled before he is deployed there.

Lookie what I got...

Forgot to share this cool item I picked up at Costco last week (Alison...get your running shoes on girlfriend!!!) I love the middle section where I can pop the new cards I have made to show my club members and customers each month when they come around. It also has a white board and magnets (still to be altered) and a pin board with cool metal pins.

Only about $24 CAD :-)

And before y'all ask..got the letters and heart years ago in the States somewhere...can't recall but think the store was going out of business.

(Oh..I also bought the racks at Ikea for my punches but don;t have them up yet...they will be my reward for when I finish the pit

Fun stuff I found today - NSR

A long time ago my Mum gave me two old autograph books. One is from her school years when everyone wrote those hysterically funny stupid poems in them. I always get a great kick out of reading what all the boys said to mum..I think maybe she was a flirt LOL I like to tease her and ask if Dad ever read these poems!

The other one was from when mum became one of the the first airline employees in Ireland. This was a deifferent type of airport...this was where the Flying Boats landed. All Transatlantic planes stopped in Shannon/Rineanna to refuel for the long flight across the Atlantic...it took up to 12 hours on some planes with stops in Iceland too. It was also where the now famous Irish Coffee was created to warm up passengers on those cold Irish nights near the water. Mum knew the chef who created the coffee! :-) Many years later mum was an honored guest at the anniversary of the airport. One lady has created a little museum of the original site and it is a wonderful thing to visit if you are ever in Ireland. It's no wonder I have flying in my blood!

So....the interesting part was...the other day a friend of ours who is an avid collector of everything LOL) was looking at Mum's autograph book and felt we had a little treasure here. So today i did a quick bit of research to check out some of the autographs mum collected in 1946 as she greeted all the celebrities who passed through the airport.

Here are some of the cool ones:

Can't make out the one in the top corner..but the others are Bob Hope, Gracie Fields and Kay Francis!!

Geraldine Fitzgerald..did you know she lived in a Character House in Hollywood that used to belong to Boris Karloff? LOL

Gotta love mums scrapbooking...stuck the photo right over the signature LOL. Hate to think of the glue she used!

Father Flanagan who founded Boys Town in the States. Again..not so clever with the news clip pastings! LOL I found one autograph of his on line signed on the back of a form newsetter selling for $2,500!!!!! Wonder if it has anything stuck on it?? Ah dear!

Check out the "hat" on her..not sure what the fashion statement was here but I am sure it was considered elegant for Transatlantic travel at the time ROTF!

So I think I might need to research the value of this little treasure and see if I can get those images moved off the signatures. I also want to chat to mum a little more to get the whole story.

I am alive, just a bit caught up with family health issues this last few weeks. I will be back in the saddle very soon and will have some cards and a little scrapbook to share with you.

Grrrr..I just finished this post and then went to find 7 people to tag and came back and realised I had not saved it..so here we go again...

Eleonor tagged me... BTW Eleonor payback is not pleasant...LOL

1) I was born and raised in Ireland...moved to Canada at 22 years of age to follow my dream career

2) I have been a flight attendant (aka Dream career) for 28 years and still loving it after all this time.

3) I was a Nanny in Hamburg for 2 years when I finished high school and because the family owned an amazing hotel we never did groceries...just called the hotel in the morning, placed an order and it would be delivered by the chauffeur that afternoon. I also never did laundry..just packed it up and listed it and sent it to the hotel LOL (I did the babies laundry at the house). They also had a house keeper and a gardner..I got lucky LOL!

4) I was "recruited" by Shelli Gardner herself when she was in Canada looking for some people to become part of the Canadian Focus Group..it's been an amazing 5 years and I look forward to the next 5! LOL..if I had known then what I know now I would have felt so much more honored and excited..but I am now, and continue to be, so thats OK!

5) I have a Cocker Spaniel who is the daughter I never had! :-) You can check out her blog here

6) I have been married to my hubby for 17 years in May...and have two of the greatest stepsons ever ... and they have two of the nicest girlfriends ever...and I get along great with my inlaws...life is good.

7) I hiked the Grand Canyon in and out ... probably the most amazing physical activity I have ever undertaken...amazing...exhausting ... but amazing!

Easter Fun - NSR

Monday was so much fun! Here are a few of the pictures of the fun and games... We were so lucky! The rain when we woke up today was pouring down, and it rained after the hunt too, but during the whole Easter brunch/hunt it was perfect...add to that, my Magnolia was in full bloom for the first time on Easter...I was a happy bunny...

This is my crazy Easter Bunny Hubby waiting for the kids to arrive! LMAO..he is such a goof. He had so much fun planning his outfit and we laughed ourselves silly as he got his hat together. It is all his own creation too! His bunny "mask" is a dust mask that he altered...the teeth were a little crooked so I had to crimp some wire and add braces LOL Love this guy!

These wee my cupcakes this year...so easy to make and I love how they turned out.

It would not be Easter without a bunny cake so I made this one for the kiddies...

To the hunt!! I always place each kind of treat together and then the kids get hints and have to scoot around the garden and find the correct treat. This evens the playing field for all of the kids including my one niece who is visually impaired. :-)

and the people who competed for the coveted Best Bonnet award...it is strangely becoming a male dominated competition! LOL

and the votes came in and the winner for 2007 is....my Funny Bunny Hubby! :-)

Could it actually be happening???? Could we actually see Spring this year?

Let me preface this post by saying it has been totally cold, wet and miserable the last couple of days here in Vancouver, preceded by about a month of cold wet and miserable weather.The forcast on friday was for days without end of more cold, wet, miserable weather. Fortunately, Tamara, our local TV weather girl, was way off for today! It was sunny and quite warm and felt so alive and fresh (well after all that rain it better be fresh!! )

This was the first and most awesome hint, my son came over to visit and said...why is the shrub humming? I went to check it out and it was COVERED in honey bees. I guess the warm sun today woke them up and they came out of their winter hibernation. Both my neighbor and us have honey bees houses. I could not believe how many were on this plant...I guess the fragrance drew them over. Not sure if you can see them in the picture unfortunately, there are about 4 or 5 in this shot.

One of the first bright flowers to bloom in my garden, the flowering Raspberry..no fruit but beautiful early blossoms and raspberry like leaves during the Summer.

I love all the new varieties of daffs but there is nothing like the old fashioned tall yellow ones for saying "Spring has Sprung!"

This was labeled as a Yellow Camellia but I think perhaps the label was wrong? LOL It stands right outside our back door and is the first thing I see every day. Yellow or red...I love it.

OK...the cold winter is going to have one BIG plus for me this Spring. Every year my HUGE Magnolia tree opens it giant blossoms way to early for Easter..and when I have the kids over for the annual Easter Egg hunt is is almost, if not totally finished leaving a messy garden behind.

This year we had such a cold winter that it is much later to open and I think perhaps it will be perfect for Easter....I'll take a picture when it is fully open and in it's glory!

UPDATE: Grrr.. Canuck's lost in the shoot out! :-( they are still #1 in the Division but this would have assured them a spot in the playoffs...still have a few games to make it! GO 'NUCKS!
